                Yeovil Juniors – coaching plan

 Week I

 1)      Jack casting –

Mat back – place a bowl 1 metre either side of the centre mark (no jack)

5 metres past the 23 marker.

Player casts 4 jacks as straight as possible and to a good length

between the 2 placed bowls.

Repeat with the mat 2 metres back from the 25 marker and the

placed bowls 1 metre either side of the full length mark.

(ie. Mat up and bowls at full length)

 

2)      Back to the centre line

Mat back, place a bowl on the centre line 2 metres past the

minimum length.

 Player to draw 4 bowls on the forehand aiming for each bowl to         

come back to the centre of the rink. (any weight)

 Repeat on the back hand.

 

3)      Draw to three lengths

Mat back – (no jack) - put a piece of tape on carpet at min length.

Place a bowl on card stand 2 metres past the minimum length,

another 2 metres past the first, another 2 metres past the second.

 Player to draw first bowl between the min length and first bowl,

then between first and second bowls, then between second and third  

and then past the third. 

Play with 4 woods on the forehand, and then 4 bowls on the backhand.

 

Week 2

 1)      In the square

Mat back – place 4 bowls 1 metre apart at a 3 quarter length.

 Jack in middle of bowls.

Player is 4 shots down and bowls to cut down the count or get the shot.

 Forehand 4 bowls

Backhand 4 bowls 

 

2)      Beat the shot

Mat back. Jack on the edge of the ditch. Bowl placed 1 metre from

ditch.

           Player to draw the shot or trail jack into ditch.

 4 bowls on forehand forehand.       

Repeat on backhand.

  

3)      Draw to off centre jack

Mat back, three quarter/long jack to one side.

 Player to draw, either hand to jack.

Then mat up, 2 metres down from 25, place jack again to one side

 

Week 3

 1)      Draw to save

Mat back – place 4 bowls 1 metre apart, jack in centre,

5 metres past the 23 marker.

 Player draws as close as possible and to save or get shot.

 4 bowls forehand, 4 bowls backhand.

 

2)      Trail

Mat back. Place a bowl either side of the jack and 2 just behind. Jack in

centre of cluster.

 Player to draw jack back to bowls just behind.

 4 bowls on the forehand.       

Repeat on backhand.

 

3)      Push and stay

Mat back – place 4 bowls, 1 bowls width apart, at a 3 quarter length

with the  jack about 2 feet behind in centre.

Player to play into bowls with 1-2 yards weight to move bowls and

get the shot.

Forehand 4 bowls

Backhand 4 bowls

 

Week 4

 1)      Cluster

Mat back  - no jack.

 Player plays a bowl on forehand, then bowls the other three to

rest in the same place. (wherever it ended up on the rink)

         Repeat on backhand.

 

2)      Draw around

Mat back. Arrange 5 bowls at three quarter/full length in the

shape of an arrow, with the jack 18 inches behind the last bowl.

 Player draws around the bowls to get shot.

 4 bowls forehand, 4 bowls backhand.

  

3)      Take out –running bowl

Mat back. Place 4 bowls (different colours) about a foot apart at

full length. (no jack)

 Player nominates a bowl and takes it out. (Not a full out firing drive)

 4 bowls forehand, 4 bowls backhand.
